Sasse - Toinen [Mood Music Records]

Sasse - Toinen [Mood Music Records]

Talking about Sasse and his Moodmusic imprint means looking back over a decade of solid contributions to the house music canon. And now, after last year's 10th anniversary of the label, the Berlin based Finn is himself back in the spotlight with his second studio album "Toinen". The name, which means "2nd" in Finnish, reflects a desire to both honor his Finnish roots and point out the surprising fact that this is only his 2nd artist album in his very productive 15 year musical career of releasing hundreds of singles, EPs and remixes.
While his debut album, "Made Within The Upper Stairs Of Heaven", was a clear Italo and Space Disco influenced work with a sound highlighted by bright claps on solid beats, euphoric and haunting melodies and dark vocals, the new album takes his trademark sound to the next level. His long experience as a DJ and producer is demonstrated once more on "Toinen".
But this time Sasse takes a strong turn towards Detroit rather than Italy. Uplifting chords and euphoric themes are a trademark of this longplayer but when the funky basslines drop there’s no doubt that you’re listening to a proper Sasse production. If you listen closely you can hear echoes of his mid-90's productions as Freestyle Man, but here they're just seeds, nourished with the musical inspirations from his numerous DJ travels, not to mention plenty of that famous Berlin electronic funk!
Another surprising new element in many of the tracks is the classic use of white noise which, when pushed to the forefront, adds a new sense of urgency to his music. Especially on "Clemens", a classic peak time club bomb, that feels both minimal and housey at the same time. And with that house groove in full effect it's no surprise to hear the classic percussion sounds painstaking placed below. Creating a solid base under which all these new sounds can ride. But in the end it's the composition that creates the magic, revealing an atmosphere and emotions from happiness to the mystic darkness that reveals this talented artist's true talent.
For though he’s standing with both legs on the dancefloor it’s still the good, deep vibes and harmonies where Sasse's years of experience shine through.

Mark Henning - Fabrique Belgique [Soma Recordings]

Mark Henning - Fabrique Belgique [Soma Recordings]

The latest offering from Londoner Mark-Henning on Soma Records is another incredible insight into the world of the minimal tech-house mastermind. Undeniably, Mark giving up his day job in London and moving to Berlin to concentrate on production has only aided his unique talent and the distorted, surreal vision he has for electronic music.
The EP, Fabrique Belgique, features two exceptional remixes of the title track alongside another of the stand-outs from his debut album, Jupiter Jive, in Stash. Fabrique Belgique will have you dancing to your worst nightmares. Frightening and freakishly pounding, his inimitable take on the disco-house theme here is astounding and it’s no doubt that sleep deprivation has played an operative role in this track, and in much of Mark’s warped and deranged electronic output. The remix comes from Dario Zenker. The Munich based experimental techno innovator brings a deep and moody, almost mellow vibe to the haunted house bounce of Mark’s original.
Stash is a hypnotic, slightly Eastern-influenced slice of glitchy, deep minimal house with a destructive breakdown that becomes more and more menacing and paranoid with every listen. Mark keeps it in the family with the second remix on the EP which comes from the skilled hands of his brother Tim Gregor. This one’s a monstrous floor-destroyer that will disturb your nightmares for the foreseeable future.

Barem - Kolimar [Minus]

Barem - Kolimar [Minus]

It’s not hard to tell that Barem’s been kicking back and enjoying the summer, soaking up the sunshine vibes and pouring new found inspiration into these three new tracks. The result is a breath-taking departure from his previous releases that demonstrates an unexpected mastery of the classic house sound. The first surprise is that each track stretches out to around the nineminute mark with Barem adopting a more patient, relaxed approach to his arrangements. The resulting laidback grooves - loopy, organic and sexy in turn - effortlessly seduce the crowd, marking a definite evolution in his sound and adding a welcome new string to his bow.
Seeee is a true dancefloor bomb. Seasoned with short, dry samples and clean percussion hits, the extended intro is in no rush to get going giving the DJ maximum opportunity to manipulate and play with the mix. Barem then drops in some phat claps and a taste of the bassline before a rush of white noise gets the hairs on your neck standing on end and the beat finally kicks in. It’s not long thereafter that the woozy, oscillating tone that works brilliantly as the track’s focal point drifts into view, playing with the crowd as it rises, falls and gradually accelerates into the strategically positioned breakdowns that allow the track to move up a couple of notches without ever really breaking sweat.
Kolimar continues in a similar vein but with slightly more shuffle on the groove and more effects applied to the individual parts. Another memorable bassline takes centre stage while the rhythmically delayed vocal samples and snare fills circle around the main theme adding an extra, disorientating dimension to the breakdowns. The groove is so strong you can anticipate the unifying control it will exert over the hungriest party crowd.
The digital only Très De Niul is also a real gem. Kicking off in a low-slung tribal style with a delayed tom pattern rolling back and forth between the speakers and a gently hypnotic piano stab, it’s warm, organic and full of emotion. In fact it’s the perfect way to welcome back the morning sun after a long night of intense partying with elongated synthetic horn pads adding sweet, soulful overtones that gently wash over the sultry groove.
Some tracks just sound right from the first moment you experience them to the point where it’s often hard to appreciate the intricacies that lie within. Their natural completeness lends them a sense of simplicity and timelessness that masks the skills necessary to realise such ideas and that’s exactly what you get here. Barem has cleverly shifted focus, bringing a new level of maturity to his music in the process.

Trentemoller - Trentemoller Remixed [Tic Tac Toe Records]

Trentemoller - Trentemoller Remixed [Tic Tac Toe Records]

We are very proud to present Trentemøller on our label again. He has released 3 tracks on Tic Tac Toe in the past. This time we give you a big remix package of his first release on TTT back in 2005, called Serenetti & Gush. Trentemøller is by far the most important and influential producer within electronic music in Denmark and therefore really needs no further introduction.
On this release we have a remix from techno maestro Maetrik from USA. His remix is very much in his typical vein, and with tons of bass, hence the remix name . Maetrik is currently going from strength to strength on labels like Treibstoff, Mothership, Iron Box and many more! New hotshot local producer Mathias Mesteño is no newcomer on Tic Tac Toe either. We just released a hot digital release with him in August and that one is still going strong, and gained lots of good feedback from all the big players. Mathias’ style is more on the jackin’ side of house things. You can be sure to see a lot to him in the future (keep an eye on Upon You, Fumakilla etc).
Another new producer team from Copenhagen is Blagger. Lars and Simon (the 2 guys behind Blagger) has already done several burning remixes on TTT and also had their first release on Swedish label Kowtow. They did a remix of the track GUSH, which has turned out really great.
Last but not least is Toronto’s finest man, James Teej. This summer we released his debut on Connect Four, including a fantastic remix from Cassy. Now he is here on TTT with a soul/jazzy remix of Serenetti.

Various Artists - Bedrock 10: Past Present Future [Bedrock Records]

Various Artists - Bedrock 10: Past Present Future [Bedrock Records]

So to ‘Bedrock 10 Past present and Future ` and to honour this massive occasion John has drafted in a careful selection of remix heavyweights to shed new light on some of the labels biggest tracks along with a tidy fistful of the labels freshest output all blended to perfection in the inimitable John Digweed mixing style.
CD1 delves deep into the Bedrock mines and strikes gold with Tom Mangan giving his mind-blowing 2001 cut ‘Chutney’ a hefty face-lift, Steve Lawler re-interpreting his own ‘Rise In’ and Danny Howells doing a tasty number on Science Department’s ‘Repercussion’. The disc culminates in M.O.D.E. turning in a fine remix of Bedrock’s ‘Heaven Scent’ which is no mean feat given the track’s gargantuan standing.
CD2 More full on and peak time this CD faces forward whilst reflectively signalling a nod to past greats. Guy J makes his presence felt among his long-established, production contemporaries on ‘Lunar’, Bruce Aisher takes on and wins against Saints and Sinners ‘Pushin Too Hard’ and Christian Smith demonstrates a lesson in subtly destroying a dance floor with his summer-smash ‘Flyertalk’ and Josh wink under his size 9 Moniker delivers an unreal remix of ‘Chutney’.
CD3 is an Unmixed affair and features original tracks from Funk d Void, Jim Rivers and Charlie May (Pindrop) and also features unreleased remixes from Guy Gerber, POB, and Chab to name a few, making this not just a bonus disc, but an absolute must have for Bedrock fans.
‘Bedrock 10’ perfectly encapsulates the essence of one of the world’s leading labels by refusing to simply compile a ‘greatest hits’ CD and therefore continuing in the pioneering spirit on which the label is based.
